Tech Brief: We created the first economical production process for 10 mil thick B4C and 5 mil thick SiC fim depositions onto a wide variety of substrates. Manufacturing of mechanical seals with 3-4X increased lifetime are now possible together with more ruggedized engines and/or engines having higher uptime/lower maintenance cost.

Value Proposition: Maintenance costs are much higher during deployment of military forces and become a significant part of an operational budget. Therefore, significant cost savings and increases deployment uptime capabilities can be realized if novel engines (pumps, generators, turbines, etc.) can be manufactured that are able to better survive in harsh environments (sand, abuse, etc.). We anticipated that our novel B4C and SiC thick film deposition technology, originally developed for commercial markets, when applied to solve slide wear maintenance problem for military/defense equipment, will enable the aerospace, army, navy and other services to obtain higher performance rotary based equipment. This will increase uptime, lower maintenance cost and/or enable to design higher performance equipment. Other applications for the defense industry are also anticipated that utilize the unique material properties of our novel and economical B4C and/or SiC thick coatings (hardness, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, high temperature capability, neutron absorption capability, oxygen resistance, etc.) to solve advanced material problems for designing and manufacturing novel defense related equipment.
