The EPS-25: A portable, power-independent medical instrument sterilizer

AFFILIATION:   Eniware, LLC, Bethesda, Maryland, United States

Track: Medical & Biotech
Area: Emergency/Disaster Relief Medicine
Tech Readiness: TRL 6

Tech Brief: The EPS-25 is a lightweight, durable, multi-use,easy-to-use, safe and effective medical instrument sterilizer. The unit requires no external energy to operate, specifically no electricity or fuel. The hand-carry portable case uses a SterilNox™ ampoule to generate NO2 gas,a disposable single-use scrubber, and a chemical indicator to ensure NO2 exposure.

Value Proposition: The EPS-25 unit and consumables represent significant cost savings over current field autoclave technology, the P2131 (Fort Defiance Industries), and can either augment or replace the P2131 for forward surgical care. The unit is hand carry portable (15 lbs empty, 25lbs with instruments). Compared to the P2131, the EPS-25 sterilization unit and consumables represent a significant reduction in weight and cube for transport. Room temperature sterilization and broad material compatibility enable the safe re-use of heat- and moisture-sensitive equipment including plastics that are incompatible with pressurized steam sterilization. The current form factor uses 3 C size alkaline batteries, has been designed to sterilize 8 simple surgery kits per cycle and requires no heat, water, fuel or externally supplied electricity to function. The unit is designed to enable continuity of quality of care and safe re-use of medical instruments in austere field conditions including humanitarian emergency and disaster response. Form factors can be designed to accommodate specific military surgical sets, such as the mini-minor and mini-major surgical sets for the STP and the FRSS trauma surgery set.
