Tech Brief: Ultra-capacitor based structural energy storage (SES) solution that’s intended for integration into defense related applications. FastCAP will prototype an ultracapacitor SES with aluminum current collectors that demonstrates high cycle lifetime and high power performance that is also modular, custom, and resistant to high temperature, shock&vibration.
Value Proposition: The proposed system would enable new mobile architecture designs with significant advances in energy storage performance. First, the long lifetime and rugged ultracapacitor technology would provide long service life over existing Li-ion constructions. Our Ultracapacitors have cycle lifetimes that exceed 1,000,000 cycles. This attribute gains significance in structural applications due to the additional overhead that may be required for replacing a structural component integrated into a much larger structure. Thus, while the design of the SES may be integrated for easy replacement, those areas of the vehicle that may not be easily replaceable, such as vehicle frames or hulls, can be considered for structural energy storage. Second, the ruggedness of FastCAP’s EE ultracapacitor technology far exceeds performance seen for traditional ultracapacitors and Li-ion batteries.FastCAP’s technology is designed to operate at extreme temperatures -30°C/150°C, under 50g vibration and 500g shock. This, combined with long cycle lifetime, extends the operating conditions of the proposed SES, removes necessity for any temperature control subsystems or shock resistant mounting, and overall reduces the likelihood of failure.The SES can be easily manufactured and integrated into existing mobile platforms. Finally, the proposed SES will offer superior safety performance over comparable Li-ion solutions.
