Tech Brief: Wattershed offers HTS cable solutions for terrestrial and subsea applications. HTS cable delivers 100 times the power density of copper with no losses to resistance. Delivering high power in small spaces, over thousands of kilometers if needed, HTS cable solves transmission problems conventional cable can't solve.
Value Proposition: The U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Homeland Security have been the primary drivers of HTS cable technology development over the past five years, since the DOE stopped funding efforts at LANL and Oakridge. HTS technology has proven itself at the demonstration level and is ready for deployment, but HTS wire and cryogenic systems remain expensive due to a lack of deployment, and industry frankly hasn't found a willing market for it yet. Wattershed has identified market niches where HTS cable can do what copper can't, and designed it's cables and cryogenics to meet those niches and jump start commercial deployment. Commercial deployment will drive down the cost of HTS wire and cable, just as it drove down the cost of semiconductors, solar, and wind technologies. The U.S. military has been the pre-eminent protector of sea lanes for global trade, and more specifically for the trade in liquid fuels, since WWII. That has enabled and secured the fastest rise in the standard of living globally in human history. We need to decarbonize the world's energy system. Wattershed offers a tangible path to doing that, trading energy across oceans, unleashing renewable power generation, transmission, and distribution, within a generation.
