TECHNOLOGY:

Tidal and River Power Turbines

AFFILIATION:   Verdant Power, Inc., New York, New York, United States

TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Power Generation
Tech Readiness: TRL 7

Tech Brief: Verdant Power turbines are installed fully underwater to convert the fast-moving currents of tides and rivers into clean electricity. The turbines are equipped with open, three-bladed rotors (similar to wind turbines) that rotate slowly and steadily at approximately 40 RPM. In tidal settings the turbines self-rotate into the prevailing current.

FIGURES OF MERIT

Value Proposition: -Low cost, efficient, readily available, scalable, and deployable electric power independent of fossil fuel sources -Assists in fulfilling mandated renewable energy purchasing requirements -Power for communications, lighting, heating, cooling, desalination and other equipment at remote locations -High duty availability sources for electric power with simple, modular design for ease of maintenance -Elimination of fuel requirement reduces vulnerability in time of conflict/fuel shortages -Remote, deep water deployment makes systems less susceptible to terrorist activities and disruption of energy flows -Sustainable, environmentally sound energy source
