Low-Mass Low-RPM Permanent Magnet Generator

AFFILIATION:   Sonsight Wind, Grayson, Georgia, United States

Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Power Generation
Tech Readiness: TRL 5

Tech Brief: The technology is a novel permanent magnet (PM) electric generator utilizing a patented modular stator core with novel fixturing to provide more power at low RPM’s without the excessive increase in mass and cost of current low RPM generators.

Value Proposition: For portable vehicle-engine driven generators: 1. High power at low RPM allows power generation at low vehicle idle speeds, thereby using less vehicle fuel. 2. Low mass, therefore less logistical burden 3. Low cost For wind turbine augmented power for bases, outposts and equipment stations (a prototype turbine utilizing the 5kW generator is currently being tested, and technology is scalable to larger turbines): 1. Due to low RPM performance, significantly larger swept areas are possible yielding greater energies at lower wind-speeds. 2. Less expensive than other quality turbines. 3. Less massive, thereby helping to lower logistical and installation costs. 4. Less power variation with wind-speed since the larger swept area allows the rated power to be achieved at a lower wind-speed and the closely related maximum power output is not exceeded in higher winds.
