Tech Brief: Orbital Traction’s engine accessory drives match power usage with demand, enabling 10-20% improvement in fuel efficiency across all accessories. Based on a simple variable speed drive that provides step-less shifting over its entire range, speed control for cooling fans, alternators and water pumps can be optimized for accessory performance.
Value Proposition: Fuel is the second-highest battlefield operational need behind water; reductions in fuel consumption provide greater freedom of action, mobility and reduce vulnerability of warfighter logistics elements. The fully burdened cost of fuel in the theater of operations is often 10 times the cost of the actual fuel due to the transportation and logistics costs. In addition to the cost, fuel supply convoys represent a significant risk to the warfighter as a target for IED’s. Current military vehicles have multiple opportunities to increase operational fuel economy with various costs and performance impacts. Orbital’s CVAD system represents a method to reduce the fuel consumption at costs well below the FE-MTVR target of ~$650 per 1% fuel efficiency improvement. In addition to reducing costs, the CVAD system can increase the vehicle performance with additional electrical power, reduced noise and potentially reduced weight. The increased fuel efficiency will also extend the operational range of the vehicle.
