Energy Generating and Ergonomic Backpacks

AFFILIATION:   Lightning Packs, LLC, Wayne, Pennsylvania, United States

Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Power Generation
Tech Readiness: TRL 6

Tech Brief: When walking or running, Lightning Packs’ electricity generating backpacks can generate average powers up to 35W depending on payload, speed and gait, and are a 50W portable power source when encamped. In addition, their proprietary suspension reduces musculoskeletal injury-inducing forces due to heavy loads 65-85%.

Value Proposition: Lightning Packs’ energy-generating and ergonomic backpacks have solved the soldier’s age-old dilemma of how to increase their tactical capability without restricting themselves with more battery weight. Until now, there has been no single technology which seamlessly combines the benefits of ergonomic field equipment and kinetic energy harvesting. Lightning Packs provides power in cases where solar does not (e.g., clouds, dark, foliage, and on the move). Not having to resupply batteries or generator fuel so often will greatly reduce the logistics cost and danger (fuel truck convoy attack) associated with the resupply of troops Soldiers wearing the packs not only feel substantially more comfortable while moving (based on testing with Marines and Soldiers), they will move faster, focus more on their objectives, and feel more at ease knowing they have backup power in an emergency situation. Troops who use a Lightning Pack versus a standard issue pack will be less likely to succumb to the chronic injuries plaguing veterans of the armed forces. With Department of Veterans Affairs funding currently $500M each year to treat musculoskeletal injuries, this represents the potential for substantially reduced claims and taxpayer burden along with the obvious improvement to individual health.
