Tech Brief: The Mobile ICS Security Trainer (MIST) is a portable, self-contained training environment that includes actual industrial control system components, as well as training manuals to facilitate hands-on learning. MIST helps train personnel to comprehend both cyber and operational characteristics of the systems that monitor and control the nation’s critical infrastructure.

Value Proposition: Understanding and mitigating cyber attacks on ICS requires trained personnel who have extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of industrial processes, control systems, and nuances of cyber-physical threats. However, the cost of even a modest ICS can exceed $100,000, making the investment in training prohibitive for most organizations. Clearly, cost-effective solutions are required to build human capital in ICS security to analyze, detect and mitigate attacks. The solution must be cost-effective and incorporate training objectives to meet the demands of the military community. The Mobile ICS Security Trainer is a novel and holistic solution that is attractive in terms of its ability to accurately replicate real-world functionality, as well as its cost and scalability. The Mobile ICS Security Trainer is intended as a solution for organizations to develop organic training programs and expand current core curriculum. Cyber threats against critical infrastructure composed of ICS pose a direct threat to national security; however, the military is ill-prepared to prevent or respond to these types of attacks. It is imperative that military professionals have the capabilities at their disposal to prepare and train for these types of events.
