Elegus EPS separators for high-energy density lithium-ion cells☆
|AFFILIATION:||Elegus EPS, Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States|
Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Energy Storage
Tech Readiness: TRL 5
Tech Brief: Elegus EPS is a newly-formed joint venture between Elegus Technologies, Energy Power Systems (EPS), and XALT Energy, all Michigan-based companies. At the heart of this venture will be the combined development and commercialization of the Kevlar separator technology from Elegus with high-energy density lithium-ion batteries from EPS and XALT.
Value Proposition: New battery concepts and materials providing extremely high energy density could dramatically increase the performance of batteries for use in electric vehicles and grid storage, but separators are increasingly becoming the limiting cell component for performance, cost, and safety, which stifles the energy storage development for sectors like national defense and military. It is also foreseeable that the Kevlar-based nanotechnology can be incorporated into thin film batteries. If the proposed high-energy density cells incorporating our separators can be manufactured, it will become possible to raise the specific energy of batteries to near the 1000 Wh/L threshold by switching to a battery chemistry based on lithium-metal electrodes with improved safety characteristics. This will make possible a new generation of electrical vehicles with longer range, lower weight, higher speed, and better safety standards.
