Proximity Based Energy Controls

AFFILIATION:   Birkeland Current LLC, Waco, Texas, United States

Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Efficiency Solutions
Tech Readiness: TRL 8

Tech Brief: Birkeland Current combines ubiquitous sensing and control with RTLS using a patented ARFID based system at the individual light fixture and plug level. The low cost system enables unique autonomous energy savings based on a user’s proximity to devices within the context of the facility energy program.

Value Proposition: The described system provides significant value through three primary and independent value proposition channels; 1) Traditional cost savings thru direct lighting and plug load usage reductions 2) Facility and campus contextual energy rate reductions thru enabled rate shifting, unique demand response solutions, and peak demand rate reductions 3) Equipment and Personnel productivity savings based on the combined real time location and devices utilization information. Value proposition 1 provides typical ROIs of 3 to 5 years for the system hardware and installation. It is the enabler to value propositions 2 and 3 which provide significantly greater savings from system customizations based on the specific use case, the existing facility contracts and equipment, and the processes and procedures governing equipment and personnel activities within a facility. Birkeland Current and it’s partner firms provide the systems engineering, process optimization, data analytics and reporting, and system support to maximize savings in these areas. Because of the fidelity of the data that is measured not computed, comparison to baselines and year on year savings calculations are not open to interpretation but are data driven from the individual plug and fixture and person level.
