Micro-Hydropower Generation

AFFILIATION:   Ocean Current Energy, LLC., Aventura, Florida, United States

Track: Energy & Resilience
Area: Power Generation
Tech Readiness: TRL 3

Tech Brief: The technology utilizes a compact, modular, light weight axial water turbine with an integral generator which when immersed in a water current will produce power for charging batteries or other electrical needs.

Value Proposition: Forward Deployment:The militaryäó»s need for battery alternatives continues to grow as the electrical power requirements for warfighting continue to increase. Recent conflicts have shown the costs associated with logistics support for forward operations. Using local energy sources like solar power is therefore gaining increased acceptance. Unfortunately, solar power is intermittent and requires large arrays. Water current can provide a higher power density, constant source of renewable power for military operations. Accessing water power has been limited by available devices with the efficiency, robustness, and portability to meet the militaryäó»s forward deployment requirements. Working closely with the military, Ocean Current Energy believes a device meeting their needs can be developed.Military Bases:Military bases often have access to waste water plants and other municipal water flows in addition to streams or rivers. The energy from these resources can be captured and used independent or in parallel with the base grid. The proposed technology can be physically scaled up or deployed in arrays to match the available base energy resource. Developing these resources helps meet the militaryäó»s renewable energy goals and offers a second source of critical function power.
