Maxterial (https://www.maxterial.com/) is pursuing a lean business model to commercialize durable, affordable, and easy-to-scale coatings with unusual repellency, anti-corrosion, and easy-to-clean performance. Rather than creating new chemicals and building new factories, Maxterial uses a proprietary mix of existing chemicals integrated into a worldwide, inexpensive and established electroplating manufacturing process. Extraordinary properties of Maxterial’s coatings offer new and innovative solutions for a myriad of billion dollar problems, including fouling, corrosion, and ice formation. Maxterial is funded by several world-class private investors such as Thiel Foundation and former CEOs and investors of successful science-backed companies. In addition to Thiel Foundation, the National Science Foundation has already reviewed and funded Maxterial’s technology through SBIR Phase I and II grants. Maxterial has received interest and inquiries from 100+ corporations, many of which are globally recognized Fortune 500 companies. As a result of this extensive customer and market discovery, we found that the technology has a great potential for the defense application. As an instance, Maxterial’s coating can potentially result in significant reductions in both energy and maintenance costs of sea warfare. The other example is an anti-icing solution for aircrafts.
